I am just a begginer in the world of hiking, hence nothing like trusting on those that have proven track record in this sport/activity.
The recommendation for my new pair of boots came from my sister-in-law. She does hundreds of kms every year, and she’s the one to blame about this epic challenge we have ahead of us.
Key points about boots:
1- Be sure they are tight. I am a 40 sized feet, so the plan is to go for a 40.
2- Be sure they are fully water proof, made of something similar to Gore-Tex. You’ll have to walk on the rain, therefore try to have your feet dry as longer as possible.
3- Go for boots that protect your ankles. They are the best for ankle protection, and if you fall, you have an extra skin layer. It also avoids small rocks to get inside your boots. By the way, if you feel any abrasive stuff inside your boots: STOP and adjust it.
4- Be sure each boot is lighter than 500g. That will make a difference after the first hiking week.
5- Try to have the back of the boot adjusted to your steps, that is, the boot sole is cut to reduce the torsion movement of your ankle. That is why you should always “train” your boots before a long hiking journey. Use them on a daily basis for at least a month.
6- Soft interior. You should feel like wearing a pair of fluffy indoor shoes.
7- Strong and flexible sole, and thicker on the heels. You should be able to walk on sliding rocks without hurting your feet. But they can’t be too thick to avoid feeling what you are stepping.
8- The shoelaces are there to adjust the top of the boot to your ankle and close it. It’s just like a fridge door, hermetically closed. Not too tight, not too lose, just fine to feel it like an extra skin.
9- Lastly, you follow my taste, you can choose any colour as long as they are black ;)
